Anxiety, depression, OCD, schizophrenia, you name it, we don't talk about it.
When you break a bone, you won't leave hospital until it's fixed. But when you go there with a mental illness, you're sent away and told "don't call us, we'll call you". What is everyone's problem with talking about mental illness? We get that it's scary, it's even scarier for someone who's battling with it. If there was more education on these issues, I guarantee we wouldn't be in this mental health crisis. At school you're educated on physical health but are we educated on the brain and how important looking after your mental state is? Does psychology really cover what a mess your brain can get you in?
Maybe people don't wanna tackle the issue because we've gone so long without talking about it, and it's become such a private matter that nobody wants to be the first to speak up or question such a taboo subject. You tell someone you've got a broken arm, they run over to sign your cast. Tell someone you've got a broken mind and they run the other way. If mental illness sufferers are brave enough to battle their own mind every day, you're brave enough to hold a conversation with them about it when they ask for your help or they begin talking about it. The topic is no scarier to broach than cancer, or addiction.
